Tandem FAQs

General Questions

Is Skydiving Safe?

Skydiving is safer than you might think!

In 2024, over 3.8 million jumps were made in the U.S., according to the United States Parachute Association. The most common injuries were ankle injuries.

With the right gear, experienced instructors, and proper training, skydiving has become a well-regulated and remarkably safe adventure.

What Is Tandem Skydiving?

A tandem skydive is the quickest, easiest, and safest way to experience the thrill of jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. You’ll be securely harnessed to one of our highly trained and certified Tandem Instructors, who will guide you every step of the way.

The adventure starts with an exhilarating exit from the plane at 14,000 feet, followed by an unforgettable 60 seconds of freefall. Then, you’ll float down under canopy, taking in amazing views during a peaceful parachute ride back to the ground.

All of our Tandem Instructors are experienced pros with at least a D license, 500 jumps, and over 3 years in the sport. You’re truly in expert hands.

Who Can Tandem Skydive?

Almost everyone can tandem skydive!

At Skydive Tennessee, we welcome tandem skydivers with open arms, but there are just a few important things to know before you jump.

To join us in the sky, you’ll need to:

  • Be at least 18 years old (don’t forget your valid photo ID)
  • Weigh no more than 250 lbs
  • Be in reasonably good physical shape for a safe and fun experience
  • Complete our online waiver before you arrive

That’s it! If you’ve got the spirit for adventure, we’ll take care of the rest.

Where Can I Go Skydiving?

Ready to take the leap? You can skydive with us at Skydive Tennessee, and we’re closer than you might think!

We’re just a scenic 80-minute drive from Nashville, about 90 minutes from Chattanooga, under 2.5 hours from Clarksville, and only 1 hour and 15 minutes from Huntsville, Alabama. No matter where you’re coming from, the sky’s waiting for you right here!

Special Considerations

Can I Tandem Skydive With My Camera?

For your safety and the protection of your camera gear, we follow the United States Parachute Association’s guideline that only skydivers with 200 jumps or more are allowed to wear a GoPro during their jump.

We recommend leaving your camera on the ground for now. This way you can focus on the thrill of your skydive, and we can ensure everything goes smoothly and safely!

If you’d love to relive the thrill (and share it with friends!), check out our video packages and choose the one that’s right for you!

Can I Tandem Skydive During the Rain?

Unfortunately, no. Safety comes first!

Skydiving is a weather-dependent adventure, and things like rain, strong winds, or storms can ground us. Not only is jumping in the rain uncomfortable (yes, it stings!), but moisture can also damage the parachutes.

If the weather isn’t on our side, we’ll go on a weather hold and keep a close eye on the radar using trusted weather apps. As soon as it’s safe to fly, we’ll do our best to get you up in the sky!

We appreciate your patience. It’s all about keeping you safe and making sure your skydive is the amazing experience you came for.

Can I Tandem Skydive With Glasses or Contacts?

Yes! When you arrive, you’ll purchase a pair of skydiving goggles. We’ve got options that work perfectly with both glasses and contacts. You’ll be able to take in the views without missing a thing!

Can I Tandem Skydive With a Disability?

In most cases, yes! We’ve had the honor of jumping with many amazing individuals with a wide range of disabilities over the years. Our experienced team is always happy to work with you to see what’s possible.

There is no one-size-fits-all, so please call us with any questions. We’ll chat through everything and do our best to make your skydiving dream a reality!

Can I Tandem Skydive If I Don't Speak English?

While most of our team primarily speaks English, we’re happy to share that we have a certified Tandem Instructor who speaks Spanish! If you’d feel more comfortable communicating in Spanish, just let us know. We’re here to make your experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Weight Questions

Why Do You Weigh Tandem Students?

At Skydive Tennessee, safety is our top priority. That starts with making sure our parachutes are properly rated for each jump.

Tandem parachutes are designed to carry the combined weight of the gear, your instructor, and you.

Since every instructor’s weight varies, knowing your (and their) weight helps us match you with the right teammate for your adventure. It’s all part of making sure your skydive is as safe and smooth as possible!

Is There a Tandem Skydiving Weight Limit?

Just like every skydiving center, Skydive Tennessee has a weight limit for tandem students, which is set at 250 lbs. Other drop zones may have slightly different limits, usually between 200–230 lbs., depending on their gear and instructors.

Our tandem parachutes are rated to handle the combined weight of the equipment, your instructor, and you. We’ve done the math using our specific gear and instructor team, and 250 lbs. is the safest max limit for our setup.

It’s all about making sure you have the safest, and most fun, skydiving experience possible!

Is There a Tandem Skydiving Weight Fee?

Yes, we do have a weight fee for tandem students who weigh 200 lbs. or more (you’ll find the breakdown in the chart below). This fee helps us maintain the highest safety standards and ensures the gear stays in top condition for every jump.

Your weight is kept totally private, seen only by your instructor and the friendly staff member checking you in. We’re all about making you feel comfortable and confident from start to finish!

Weight Fee Chart

200 lbs. – 229 lbs. = $20
230 lbs. – 239 lbs. = $30
240 lbs. – 249 lbs. = $40
250 lbs.+ = $50
